Ian’s childhood dream was to work as a local family doctor.
To this day, he feels privileged to listen to, connect with, and
collaboratively help people from all walks of life.
He enjoys the full spectrum of General Practice.
After completing primary and secondary school in Brisbane, he studied
medicine at the University of Queensland and graduated in 1999.
Ian appreciates ongoing learning.
His past additional studies
include:
– Certificate in Musculoskeletal Medicine (AAMM).
– Advanced Clinical Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine and Surgery
(SCCA).
– Advanced Clinical Certificate of Dermoscopy (SCCA), the science of
visualising and understanding deeper skin features, to much more
accurately diagnose skin cancers.
– Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health (FPQ), including
men’s health.
– Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (QUT), comprising
one third of the MBA program, stimulated by his search to help improve
health care delivery with a more holistic and real world
understanding.
After his junior medical officer hospital rotations, he worked and
trained in more advanced roles:
– Qld Health medical registrar (covering Internal Medicine fields such
as cardiology, respiratory, sleep, diabetes, gastroenterology, and
infectious diseases).
– Qld Health psychiatry registrar.
– Occupational medicine doctor.
– Private hospital medical officer (various different roles) and
surgical assistant.
– Rural/regional GP locums.
– Clinical researcher.
– Mentor for medical students and GP registrars.
He enjoys working three days a week as a GP, and one day a week as a
medical research investigator for promising new interventions
(including for diabetes, weight loss, chronic pain and immunisations).
Outside of work, he likes being with his wife and two children,
reading, watching movies, travelling, keeping acceptably fit (with
variable enjoyment!), and connecting with friends.
